SCIENTIFIC AREA

Training and research. Our reason for being.
We are aware that one of the main assets of any organization is its human resources.
In this regard, it is worth highlighting the training plan that our center has been developing with its various professionals (gynecologists, biologists, nurses, assistants, and administrators), both in areas of general interest (total quality) and in those specific to each specialty.
This, along with aspects related to research, absolute and personalized dedication to the patient, and being at the forefront of the latest technologies, constitutes our reason for being.
Thanks to the spirit of seeking improvement in the field of reproduction and the interest in research of FIVAP professionals, the techniques we began to use for monitoring our treatments and transfers have been adopted by other European centers and even recommended by the manufacturers of our equipment.
An example of this is SonoAVC monitoring of follicular development and the “antral follicular count” for analyzing ovarian reserve.
Both were presented at the recent American Fertility Congress, in Philadelphia, United States in October 2019.

In this same area, FIVAP has participated in the development of the updated edition of the book Ultrasound Imaging in Reproductive Medicine, Advances in Infertility Work-up, Treatment and ART, considered “the most comprehensive book on ultrasound imaging in assisted reproduction technology and reproductive medicine, which reports on potential emerging technologies with the improvement in ultrasound equipment.”

The book chapter entitled “SonoAVC (Sonographic-Based Automated Volume Count)” discusses the usefulness of this tool in evaluating the ovaries and their follicular development, providing additional information on each follicle and advantages for the patient, shortening examination time, making follicular monitoring easier, and understanding the progress of the treatment.

Training and Research

  • At FIVAP, weekly clinical sessions are held to update and train all staff.
We actively participate in the delivery and organization of courses in the areas of assisted reproduction and ultrasound, bringing current topics to other professionals in the field.
  • The Canary Islands Human Reproduction Assistance Center and the University of La Laguna (ULL) established an educational cooperation agreement for external internships (CM15-422 of November 12, 2015). This agreement allows final-year biology students to complete internships in our laboratories.
  • We collaborate with the Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria University Hospital (HUNSC) through an agreement since September 2009 for the rotation of Obstetrics and Gynecology residents.
  • We also collaborate with other national and European centers to exchange Obstetrics and Gynecology residents and embryologists.
  • We carry out several research and innovation projects in collaboration with the Department of Biochemistry, Microbiology, Cell Biology and Genetics of the University of La Laguna and with the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the New York University School of Medicine, New York, NY, where Dr. A. Palumbo is Adjunct Associate Professor.

A fundamental tool for maintaining ongoing training and research activity at FIVAP is based on regular attendance at conferences of scientific societies in the field of reproductive medicine.

Our staff continuously refreshes their knowledge by attending annual conferences of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE), the Spanish Fertility Society (SEF), and the Association for the Study of Reproductive Biology (ASEBIR). These conferences also include sending scientific papers such as posters and oral presentations, and keeping staff up to date with the latest trends and developments in the rapidly advancing science of human reproduction.

ESHRE 2019

During the last congress of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology, held in Vienna from June 23 to 26, 2019, FIVAP was represented by Dr. Palumbo, Dr. Guerrero, Dr. Rouleau, Dr. Hernández, Laura Cornago, and Eva Ramos. At this congress, one of FIVAP’s latest research projects, presented by Dr. Juliana Guerrero Delgado, was presented as an oral presentation entitled “Ultrasound guidance for hysteroscopic metroplasty, resection of intrauterine adhesions, and hysteroscopic myomectomy: analysis of 1,104 cases of intraoperative 3D sonohysterography.”

ASRM 2019

The 75th American Society for Reproductive Medicine Scientific Congress took place in Philadelphia from October 12th to 16th, attended by Dr. Palumbo, Dr. Hernández, and Dr. Vásquez representing FIVAP. At this Congress, which brings together renowned specialists and researchers in the field of Assisted Reproduction, our team took refresher courses on recurrent miscarriages, polycystic ovary syndrome and reproduction, fertility preservation, trends in gynecological fertility surgery, advances in laboratory techniques, artificial intelligence, among others.

ASEBIR 2019

From October 23rd to 25th, 2019, the 10th Congress of the Association for the Study of Reproductive Biology (ASEBIR) was held in Cáceres, Spain. Our biologist Patricia Marrero attended this event to learn about and share the latest advances in assisted reproduction.
