“Giving birth should be one of your greatest achievements, not one of your greatest fears.”
– Jane Weideman
Once the pregnancy is diagnosed, we base follow-up on regular appointments every two weeks during the first trimester (from the beginning of pregnancy to week 12 of gestation).
At all appointments, we will perform:
Maternal weight and blood pressure monitoring.
Pregnancy dating, 3D and 4D ultrasounds.
We will address any questions you may have.
We will request first-trimester blood tests and explain the pregnancy monitoring process and the tests available to assess the pregnancy.
Fetal DNA Testing on Maternal Blood
It can be performed from week 10 of pregnancy. It is a noninvasive test, meaning it is performed by drawing blood from the mother, without the need to directly extract fetal amniotic fluid (amniocentesis) or biopsy the chorion (placenta). It consists of studying the amount of fetal DNA found in the maternal blood.
It provides information on the probability of the fetus having chromosomal abnormalities such as Down syndrome (Trisomy 21), Trisomy 13, and Trisomy 18. It stands out for its high positive predictive value, which, compared to traditional screening, serves as a tool to reduce invasive procedures in certain cases and minimize patient anxiety.
This test should not replace the first trimester morphological ultrasound, performed from week 11 to week 13 and day 6.
First Trimester Screening
This test is performed between weeks 11 and 13, and results are available within a few days. This test determines the risk of developing fetal chromosomal abnormalities in the first trimester of pregnancy through maternal blood tests and a fetal ultrasound.
This test includes the following:
Morphological fetal ultrasound, measuring the most important parameters for calculating the probability of chromosomal abnormalities and screening for hypertension during pregnancy (preeclampsia).
Blood tests for screening for chromosomal abnormalities.
Preeclampsia screening.
3D and 4D ultrasound so you can see your baby moving.
After week 12, checkups become monthly.
Unless otherwise indicated, we will be available to help at any time.
These checkups continue to require fetal growth monitoring with 3D and 4D ultrasounds, also emphasizing maternal health, offering appropriate recommendations on nutrition, physical and sexual activity, and health and prevention during pregnancy.
We will provide information on the recommended blood tests during this trimester, including the well-known “sugar test” called the O’Sullivan test, which is important during this trimester. We will also provide information on the medications and vaccines that should be administered during this period, depending on each patient’s needs.
Starting at week 28, we will resume biweekly checkups.
We will assess the maternal clinical picture and ultrasound the fetal growth, placenta, amniotic fluid, and other factors. We will also indicate when the third-trimester blood work and other relevant tests should be performed.
A little later in the pregnancy, we offer the option of performing cardiotocographic records, completing the pregnancy monitoring from the third trimester until the end of the pregnancy. In addition to the pregnancy outcome assessments at the Reference Center, you will also be assisted by our gynecologists and midwives.
After the pregnancy is complete, FIVAP is available to answer any questions regarding postpartum care, breastfeeding, and even basic newborn care. We recommend a gynecological checkup one and a half months after delivery.
“Let pregnancy be an opportunity to appreciate our female bodies.”
